In all the languages that I know, I never had any issues with verbs and French is no exception. There are a few rules that do differ from English and may not be easily acceptable to your logical mind but overall its simple. The Verb 'To Have' - Le Verbe Avoir

Avoir Verbs are verbs used in same way 'To Have' in English. So they are used in place of verbs like - has, had, got, etc. They are used with the past participle to make compound tenses.

Verb to have : avoir, present

Je Suis I have
Tu as You have
Il a He has
Elle a She has
Nous avons We have
Vous avez You have
Ils ont They have

 

Verb to be : être, imperfect

J'avais I had

Tu avais

You had

Il avait

He had
Elle avait She had

Vous aviez

You had
Ils avaient They had
Nous avions We had

Verb to have : avoir, future

J'aurai

I will have
Tu auras You will have
Il aura He will have
